Melatonin is a hormone that’s produced by the pineal gland, a tiny gland in our brains that’s responsible for triggering sleep. It’s influenced mostly by light – the lack of light starts production, and the presence of light turns it off.

This helps explain why melatonin is often used for jet lag – our bodies get out of sync with the local day and night light cues, and it normally takes about a day per timezone to align without some help.

It also explains the idea about turning off the TV, computer and smart phones about an hour before going to bed – that extra light inhibits the natural production of melatonin.

But the question is: does supplemental melatonin help us sleep?

It depends.
