Beauty Tips: Natural Remedies for Top 5 Pet Peeves

1. Brittle nails:

There’s nothing more annoying than nails that can’t handle your day-to-day activities. And it’s tough to resist peeling and nibbling on them to “even them out”. But, rest assured, with a little bit of extra care, you can let nature prevent all of this frustration.

From the inside out: Your nails are often an indicator of your overall health. So, if your nails are chipping, assess your diet and see how you can add more protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids, and vitamin B-12. Salmon and other fatty fish, beans, nuts, and carrots are a good start.

From the outside in: If you’re using nail polish to keep your nails from chipping, make sure you’re using one that’s relatively safe. According to Safe Cosmetics, nail polishes with dibutyl phthalate (DBP), formaldehyde and toluene are considered unsafe. Recently, many popular brands like Sally Hansen have removed these three carcinogens. Make sure you’re reading ingredient labels and not just the price tags!

 

 2. Bags under the eyes:

Because no one likes to hear “you look tired.” 

From the inside out: Puffier-than-normal eyes are usually a result of water retention – or in other words, that you’re either dehydrated or have eaten too much salt. Drink some water – and get some sleep, for god’s sake!

From the outside in: Apply a cold compress over your eyes (whether it’s an ice cube, chilled tea bag, or a cucumber slice). It really works – plus it’s a great way to energize yourself be it in the morning, after staring at a computer screen for a long time, or post nap

3. Breakouts:

Always uninvited, rarely brief. 

From the inside out: While you can’t eat your way out of genetics, you can reduce random breakouts by avoiding these two common pimple culprits: sugars (that includes alcohol!) to decrease your body’s need to produce insulin (which produces sebum); and foods that throw your endocrine system off balance (like dairy products), which tend to have a lot of hormones and additives like estrogen, progesterone, and steroids.

From the outside in: Don’t touch your blemishes! Be patient, and make sure you keep your skin clean by using a gentle cleanser and toner – and believe it or not, moisturizer! Give your skin a chance to heal.

4. Hang-nail:

They’re small little buggers, but they’re a big pain.

From the inside out: There’s not much you can do about a hangnail physically from the inside – but the least you can do is muster up some will power to stop playing with it. Don’t rip it out, pull on it, or fiddle with it or you risk infection; instead, clip it so it doesn’t “hang” so much and just be patient.

From the outside in: To prevent hangnails, Get in the habit of applying moisturizer to your nails on a daily basis (I like to use almond oil). A hangnail, after all, is just a little piece of skin that shows up when the skin around your nail doesn’t get an ample supply of oil.

5. Fatigue:

Just a fancy word for “sluggish”, “exhausted” and sometimes, “lazy”.

From the inside out: Take a (strict) 20-minute power nap (don’t sleep too long or your body will think it’s really bedtime!) Or eat a low GI food or a complex carbohydrate (like oatmeal), which provides the body with slow-burning calories, so you’ll keep going without burning out after the sugar wears off.

I also sometimes find that all I’m missing is water – so when in doubt, gulp down some H2O and then re-examine how you feel.

From the outside in: If you just can’t seem to muster up the energy you need to get through X, Y, and Z, feel free to reach for a cup of coffee. Just make sure it’s made from quality beans that are organic, or you’ll be risking ingesting pesticides and other chemicals used in commercial agricultural and processing methods. Coffee is no longer getting the bad rap it used to and shouldn’t induce a guilt trip (read why here).

If you want to lower the caffeine in your cup, brew the coffee faster, brew it at a lower temperature, or opt for a darker roast. (p.s. A single espresso has less caffeine than a cup of regular drip coffee!)
