Stove Top Popcorn – an Eco-Friendly Way to Pop!

Popcorn Stand

Humans like to create products that make life more convenient, which often comes at a cost to the planet and our health. Microwave popcorn is one of those products.

Have you ever tried to make popcorn at home the old fashioned way on your stove top? It’s actually not that hard. It’s also much healthier, tastes infinitely better, and reduces your packaging footprint. You won’t have to worry about all those icky imitation butter chemicals and preservatives found in microwave popcorn, and you can add your own creative flavourings to make it an extra-delicious experience.

What you’ll need

1 large saucepan with lid

1/3 cup organic popcorn kernels (tip: find them in the bulk section)

1 tbsp oil (try vegetable oil, coconut oil, or peanut oil)

1 tsp sun-dried sea salt

How to make stove top popcorn

1.) Heat the oil in the saucepan on medium high heat

2.) Add salt (this will infuse salty goodness into your popcorn as it pops)

3.) Put a couple kernels in the oil and cover

4.) Once the kernels pop, add the rest of the popcorn, put the lid back on, and remove from heat for 30 seconds (this allows the kernels to heat evenly and pop at the same time)

5.) Return the saucepan to the heat and wait for your kernels to pop

6.) Once the popping slows, your popcorn is ready!

Healthy popcorn seasonings

Nutritional yeast imparts a cheesy/salty flavour and is packed with B vitamins!

Red pepper flakes for a little spice!

Your favourite spice blends like curry, oregano & basil, fresh cracked black pepper, garlic powder or any combo you like!

What seasonings do you like to use? Share them in the comments!

Happy popping!
